The short answer
Choose a bioethanol fireplace if you want a real flame: its light, its movement, the gentle warmth on your face on a cool evening in January. Choose a water vapour fireplace if you want the presence of fire in your room all year, with no heat, no open flame and nothing to refuel but water.
Many Gulf homes end up with both: a real flame in the majlis or on the terrace for winter gatherings, and water vapour in the family living room or a child’s play area where it can run every evening in August. The rest of this guide helps you decide room by room.
How each one works
Bioethanol: a living flame without a chimney
Bioethanol is a plant-based alcohol fuel. When it burns it releases heat, water vapour and a small amount of carbon dioxide, and no smoke, soot or ash. That is why a bioethanol fireplace needs no chimney or flue, and why the flame can go into a stone wall, a room divider, a ceiling or even a dining table.
Decoflame’s automatic Denver F6 burner is built in Vestbjerg, Denmark, in lengths from 62 cm to 3.92 m. You light it from the control panel, the remote or the Decoflame app, choose one of six flame levels, and let the built-in sensors look after the rest.
Water vapour: the look of flame, made from light and mist
A Hybrid Mist water vapour fireplace atomises demineralised water into a very fine vapour. LEDs on both sides of the burner light the mist from within, and it rises and moves like a flame. There is no combustion, so there is no heat, and the surface stays cool to the touch. The top plate is heated so water does not condense on it.

Side by side
| Bioethanol | Water vapour (Hybrid Mist) | |
|---|---|---|
| The flame | A real, living flame | LED-lit mist that moves like flame |
| Warmth | Gentle radiant warmth, decorative | None, cool to the touch |
| Best season in the Gulf | Winter evenings, October to March | All year, including summer |
| Runs on | Bioethanol fuel | Electricity and demineralised water |
| Chimney or gas line | Not needed | Not needed |
| Sizes | Denver F6 from 62 cm to 3.92 m | 720, 920 and 1,120 mm burners |
| Run time | 1,020 mm burner: about 7.3 h at maximum flame | Up to 48, 53 or 57 h on one tank |
| Outdoor use | Yes, with outdoor models | Indoor |
| Near small children | Supervise, as with any flame | No open flame, cool surface |
Choosing room by room
The majlis
The majlis is where a fireplace earns its place: guests sit along the walls, coffee goes round, and the conversation lasts long after dinner. A long linear bioethanol flame set low along one wall gives every seat a view of it. On winter nights, especially in Riyadh or inland, the real flame adds a warmth that guests notice.
If your majlis is used all year, or if it hosts many children at family gatherings, water vapour keeps the same focal point through the summer. Our guide to designing a majlis around a fireplace goes deeper into placement and materials.
The family living room
This is the room used every day, often with the air conditioning on and children close by. Water vapour is usually the easier choice here: you can switch it on at any hour of any month, and it adds a little humidity to air-conditioned rooms. If you want a real flame for winter evenings, a convertible casing lets you change burner later.
Bedrooms, dressing rooms and spas
Rooms where you want calm and where you may leave the fire running while you rest suit water vapour. It runs for up to two days on one tank, and there is no flame to watch.
Terraces, rooftops and the outdoor majlis
Outdoors, the choice is bioethanol: the real flame is the point of an evening outside. Decoflame makes an outdoor built-in burner for stone and concrete surfaces, and the Nice series of fire tables. Read our guide to outdoor fireplaces for Gulf terraces.
Hotels, restaurants and public spaces
Where an open flame is restricted, water vapour gives a lobby or a restaurant the same presence without fire. Where a real flame is allowed and wanted, a long bioethanol burner makes the statement. Our specification guide for hotels covers both.
Five questions that settle it
- When will you use it? Mostly winter evenings: bioethanol. Every day, all year: water vapour.
- Do you want warmth, or only the look? Warmth, even gentle: bioethanol. Look only: water vapour.
- Who is in the room? Very young children or elderly relatives moving around: water vapour is the relaxed choice.
- How do you want to refill it? Bioethanol can use an optional 60 L automatic tank. Hybrid Mist needs only demineralised water.
- Indoors or out? Outdoors, only bioethanol.
What stays the same
Whichever fire you choose, the rest of the fireplace is designed the same way. Both burners sit in the same family of Montreal casings, in front, corner, three-sided and see-through versions, and both can be finished in black, brushed steel, Corten, copper, brass or any RAL colour. Both are controlled from a display, a remote or the Decoflame app. And both are drawn for your room by our designers in Denmark, then built by hand in our factory, as described in how a custom fireplace is made.
If you are still unsure, try both in your own room with our visualiser, or book a private design consultation. We will look at the room, how you use it and who gathers there, and recommend the fire that suits it.
