The short answer

An electric fireplace shows a flame. A water vapour fireplace makes one out of mist and light.

Most electric fireplaces create the effect with LEDs and a screen, a printed panel or a turning reflector. Many also have a fan heater inside, so they are part decoration and part room heater. They need nothing but a socket.

A water vapour fireplace such as Decoflame’s Hybrid Mist turns demineralised water into a very fine vapour and lights it from both sides with LEDs. The mist rises above the burner and moves like a flame. There is no combustion and no heat. It needs a power point and a tank of demineralised water.

Both have a place. This guide explains where each one fits in a Gulf home, so you can choose with your eyes open.

How each one makes its flame

Electric: a picture of a flame

The flame of an electric fireplace sits on a surface: a screen, a panel or a mirror behind glass. It can look convincing from straight in front. From the side, or when you walk past, it stays flat, because the light never leaves that surface.

Some products sold as “electric” are in fact water vapour units. If you are comparing, ask one simple question: is the flame light on a surface, or real mist in the air?

Water vapour: real mist, lit from within

Hybrid Mist is built in Vestbjerg, Denmark. Demineralised water is atomised into a mist so fine it moves on the air in the room, and LEDs on both sides of the burner light it from within. Because the mist is real, the flame has depth. It rises above the top plate, it changes shape, and you can see it from the side and from above.

What matters in a Gulf home

Heat is rarely the point

In Europe, the heater inside an electric fireplace is part of why people buy one. In the Gulf, the air conditioning runs most of the year, and a heater is something you switch off. What you want is the presence of fire in the room: the glow, the movement, the focal point for the evening.

Water vapour gives exactly that and nothing else. It adds no heat to a cooled room, so it can run on an evening in August as easily as in January.

Air-conditioned rooms are dry

Rooms that are cooled all day tend to have dry air. Hybrid Mist adds a little moisture as it runs. It will not change the climate of a room, and the top plate is heated so no water settles on it, but it is a pleasant side effect of a fire made from water.

The view from the majlis

In a majlis, guests sit along the walls, not in front of a screen. Many of them see the fireplace at an angle. A flame on a surface loses its effect from the side. Mist rising into the air does not, which is why Hybrid Mist works in corner, three-sided and see-through fireplaces. Our guide to designing a majlis around a fireplace covers placement in more detail.

Family rooms and children

Neither option has an open flame. Water vapour has no heat at all, so it is a relaxed choice for a family living room or a play area. With any electric fireplace that has a heater, keep small hands away from the warm air outlet.

If you are looking for a decorative electric fireplace

Most people who search for a decorative electric fireplace do not want a heater. They want fire in the wall, with no chimney and no gas, that works in summer as well as winter. Before you choose, check five things:

  1. Look at the flame from the side. Stand at an angle, where a guest in the majlis would sit. If the depth disappears, the flame is a picture on a surface.
  2. Ask about heat. Many electric fireplaces have a fan heater inside. In an air-conditioned room you will rarely want it. Hybrid Mist gives no heat at all.
  3. Size before model. A ready-made unit comes in a fixed frame, and the wall adapts to it. A made-to-measure fireplace is drawn for your wall: front, corner, three-sided or see-through.
  4. What it needs on site. A typical electric fireplace needs only a socket. Hybrid Mist needs power and a tank of demineralised water, refilled about every two days if it runs nonstop.
  5. The TV wall. It is the wall people ask about most. A chimneyless fireplace goes straight into it, with the screen above and the flame below. The fireplace without a chimney guide has more ideas for walls and dividers.

Living with each one

An electric fireplace is the simplest to own. You plug it in and switch it on. There is nothing to refill.

A water vapour fireplace asks for one small habit: topping up the tank with demineralised water. On one fill, the Hybrid Mist burners run up to 48 hours (720 mm), 53 hours (920 mm) or 57 hours (1,120 mm). Use demineralised water only: any other water voids the warranty.

You control Hybrid Mist from the control panel, the remote or the Decoflame app, where you can set the flame intensity, see the remaining time and set an automatic switch-off. Our water vapour page answers the most common questions on care, humidity and warranty.

Five questions that settle it

  1. Do you want heat? If yes, and you want it from a plug, an electric heater-fireplace does that. If you want the look of fire without heat, choose water vapour.
  2. Where will people sit? If guests will see it from the side, as in a majlis, choose water vapour.
  3. Is it a feature or an accessory? For a fireplace built into a wall, a room divider or a stone surround, made to measure, water vapour gives the real presence of fire.
  4. Are you happy to refill water? Every two days or so if it runs non-stop. If not, electric needs no refilling at all.
  5. Might you want a real flame one day? A convertible Hybrid Mist casing can later take a bioethanol burner. Our guide to bioethanol or water vapour helps with that choice.

Made to measure, like the rest of the room

A Hybrid Mist fireplace is not a unit you pick off a shelf. It is drawn for your wall by our designers in Denmark and built by hand, in casings of 800, 1,000 or 1,200 mm and in front, corner, three-sided and see-through versions, finished in black, brushed steel, copper, brass or any RAL colour. How a custom fireplace is made explains each step.
