The short version

A space heater is an appliance. Its job is to warm the room, and once the room is warm, its job is done. You buy it ready-made, move it between rooms, and put it away when winter ends.

A decorative fireplace is part of the house. It is built into the wall of the majlis or living room, or into the courtyard, and it is chosen for the fire itself: the glow, the movement, the place guests turn towards and gather around. Warmth, if any, comes second.

So the first question is not “which is better?” but “what do I want?”: a warmer room, or a place for the evening to gather.

What people usually mean by “heater”

In Saudi Arabia and across the Gulf, a heater is usually one of these:

  • An electric fan or element heater: small, quick, plugged into a socket.
  • An oil-filled radiator: slow to warm, holds its heat.
  • A gas heater with a cylinder, used in rest houses and open spaces.

Some products sold as “decorative heaters” are electric heaters in a fireplace-style frame, showing a flame picture on a screen and warming the room with a fan. They are still heaters, in a nicer shape.

All of these do their job well, and they are the right choice when heat is what you need.

What a decorative fireplace means

A decorative fireplace is designed for one place. At Decoflame we work with two kinds, both for indoor and outdoor rooms:

Bioethanol. A real flame from a liquid, plant-based fuel, with no chimney, smoke, soot or ash. Automatic burners run from 62 cm to 3.92 m, with six flame levels, controlled from the panel, the remote or the Decoflame app. It gives a gentle radiant warmth, welcome from November to March, but it is not a heater.

Water vapour. In Hybrid Mist, demineralised water becomes a fine mist lit from within by LEDs, so it rises and moves like a flame. No combustion and no heat, so it runs every evening of the year in an air-conditioned room without working against the AC.

Both are handmade in Denmark to the size of the space: front, corner, three-sided or see-through, in a stone or plaster wall, in the TV wall, or in a table. See all the options on our indoor and outdoor fireplaces page.

When a heater is enough

Saying it plainly saves you money and time. A heater is the right choice when:

  • the goal is to warm a bedroom or study on cold nights,
  • you want something to move between rooms,
  • there is no wall or majlis to design around.

A decorative fireplace does not replace a heater in these cases, and it is not meant to.

When a decorative fireplace is worth it

In the majlis. The majlis is built around hospitality, and fire has always been at its centre. A bioethanol burner set into a wall or a low bench brings that centre back, with no wood and no smoke. Our majlis fireplace guide covers placement and materials.

In the living room and the TV wall. With no chimney, the fireplace goes into the TV wall: screen above, flame below. It is the wall we are asked about most.

In the courtyard and on the roof. On winter evenings, a modern mashab or a bioethanol fire table gathers the group outside. See the modern mashab guide.

When you want fire in summer too. That is water vapour: the same view, without a degree of heat.

Questions to ask before you choose

  1. Do I want heat or fire? Heat alone: a heater. Fire and the evening: a decorative fireplace.
  2. Do I want warmth in winter? Bioethanol adds a gentle warmth to a real flame. If you want no heat at all, choose water vapour. Our guide to bioethanol or water vapour helps decide.
  3. How big is the room? Each bioethanol burner has a minimum room volume in its datasheet, for example 102 m³ for the 1,020 mm Denver F6, and the room is ventilated while it burns. Water vapour has no room-size requirement.
  4. Is there a chimney or a gas line? You need neither. Our guide to a fireplace without a chimney covers apartments, villas and towers.

Made to measure, not off a shelf

A heater is picked from a shelf. A Decoflame fireplace is drawn for your wall and your majlis, then handmade in Vestbjerg, Denmark, where Decoflame has made fireplaces since 2008. We explain each step in how a custom fireplace is made.
