A fireplace for a city that lives indoors half the year
Dubai and Abu Dhabi homes are built for two seasons. From May to September, life moves indoors into air-conditioned living rooms and majlis. From November to March, it moves outside: to terraces, rooftops, courtyards and the garden majlis.
That rhythm shapes which fireplace makes sense, and it is why we usually talk about two fires rather than one.
- Indoors, all year: a water vapour fireplace. Hybrid Mist creates the look of flame from demineralised water and LED light, with no heat, so it can run in August as happily as in January. It even adds a little humidity to air-conditioned rooms.
- For the cool season, indoors and out: a bioethanol fireplace with a real, living flame. No chimney, no gas line, no smoke.
Villas: the majlis, the living room and the garden
In villas from Emirates Hills and Al Barari to Saadiyat and Al Raha, the fireplace usually earns its place in three rooms.
The formal majlis. Guests sit along the walls, so a long, low linear flame along one wall gives every seat a view. The Denver F6 burner is made from 62 cm to 3.92 m, so the flame can follow the wall. See designing a majlis around a fireplace.
The family living room. Used every evening, often with children around. A three-sided or corner Hybrid Mist fireplace, cool to the touch, is the relaxed choice.
The garden and the outdoor majlis. For winter evenings, an outdoor built-in burner set into a stone bench or low wall, or a fire table by the pool. Read outdoor fireplaces for Gulf terraces.
Penthouses and apartments
Downtown, Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah and Al Reem Island are full of apartments with long walls and big views, and no chimney. Bioethanol needs neither a chimney nor a gas connection, and Hybrid Mist needs only power and water, so a fireplace is possible in places where a traditional one never could be.
Two practical points specific to towers:
- Building rules. Towers and communities have their own rules about open flames indoors and on balconies. We check them with you before designing. Where a flame is not allowed, water vapour is the answer.
- Room volume. For bioethanol, the room must meet the burner’s minimum volume from its datasheet, for example 102 m³ for a 1,020 mm Denver F6. Most living rooms meet it; smaller rooms suit water vapour. Our safety guide explains the check.
