Why the outdoor fire matters in the Gulf

In much of Europe a fireplace is about the cold. In the Gulf, the outdoor fire is about the season: the months when evenings are finally cool enough to sit outside, when families gather on the roof, in the courtyard or around the pool, and when an outdoor majlis becomes the place to receive guests.

A real flame gives that space a centre. It draws people together, lights faces rather than floors, and adds just enough warmth on the coolest nights.

Why bioethanol suits outdoor spaces

Bioethanol burns without smoke, soot or ash, and it needs no gas line and no chimney. That makes it practical where running services is hard: on a penthouse terrace, on a rooftop, beside a pool, or in the middle of a courtyard. There is no smoke to drift towards the neighbours or into the house.

Water vapour fireplaces are designed for indoor use, so outdoors the choice is a real bioethanol flame.

Three ways to bring fire outside

Option What it is Best for
Outdoor built-in burner A 980 mm burner set into a flat surface of stone, concrete or masonry Built-in benches, low walls, tables, the outdoor majlis
Nice series Round, Square Lounge and Square Tower, as drop-in burners or table-top fires, indoors or out Lounge tables, pool decks, terraces
Freestanding fires Pieces that can be moved between spaces Changing layouts, from garden lounge to living room

Outdoor bioethanol burner set into a white masonry wall in a courtyard

The built-in burner is the most architectural choice: it becomes part of the terrace itself. The Nice series gives a furniture-like piece that can go where the seating is. Our outdoor fireplaces page shows the full range.

Planning the placement

Wind

Wind is the main thing to plan for outdoors. A flame in a steady breeze leans, flickers and burns less evenly. Look at where the wind usually comes from in the evening on your terrace, and use walls, planters, glass screens or the building itself to shelter the fire. Rooftops and high terraces are more exposed than courtyards, so they need more thought.

Shade and daytime

Most outdoor fires are used after sunset, but they live outside all day. Plan where the burner sits relative to shade structures, and ask us about covers for the hours it is not in use.

How guests move

Keep a clear path between the house and the seating, so nobody has to step past the fire to reach a seat or to serve coffee. A fire at the centre of a seating group works best when the seats are arranged around it with comfortable room between.

Surfaces and surroundings

The outdoor built-in burner is designed for flat surfaces of stone, concrete or masonry. Keep cushions, awnings, plants and fabric at a sensible distance, as with any flame, and keep the space above the fire open.

Terrace, rooftop, courtyard, pool deck

  • The outdoor majlis: a long built-in burner set into a stone bench or low wall, with seating on three sides.
  • The rooftop: a sheltered corner with a glass screen, and a fire table the family gathers around.
  • The courtyard: a central fire with the house around it, naturally sheltered from wind.
  • The pool deck: a Nice fire table between loungers, lit after the last swim.

Rules and permissions

Villa communities, towers and hotels each have their own rules about open flames on terraces and balconies. We check your building’s or community’s rules with you before designing, and we plan the placement for wind and safety. If an open flame is not allowed on a particular terrace, we will tell you so.

Living with an outdoor fire

  • Refill only when the burner is cold, then light it with a long fireplace lighter. It takes a minute.
  • A manual burner runs about four hours on one litre of bioethanol.
  • Never leave the fire unattended, and keep children supervised.
  • Use a cover between seasons if we recommend one for your model and position.

The season starts sooner than you think

Outdoor fireplaces are made to measure in Denmark and planned around your terrace, so the best time to start is before the cool evenings arrive. Browse the outdoor range, see how the same thinking applies indoors in designing a majlis around a fireplace, and book a private design consultation. Send us a photo of the terrace and we will come back with ideas.
